Furnace Tune-Up Checklist Before Windsor-Essex Winter

Windsor-Essex winters don’t ease in gently, one week it’s a mild fall afternoon, the next you’re reaching for the thermostat at 6am and hoping the furnace remembers how to do its job. A few minutes of prep in September and October can be the difference between a warm, worry-free winter and an emergency no-heat call on the coldest night of the year.

Here’s what to check before the cold sets in, and where it’s worth bringing in a certified technician.

1. Replace the Air Filter
This is the single easiest thing a homeowner can do, and the one most often skipped. A clogged filter restricts airflow, makes your furnace work harder, and drives up energy bills. Check it now, and plan to swap it every 1–3 months through the heating season depending on filter type and whether you have pets.

2. Clear the Area Around Your Furnace
Boxes, storage bins, and holiday decorations have a way of migrating toward the furnace closet over the summer. Give your system at least two feet of clearance on all sides, it needs airflow to run safely and efficiently, and technicians need room to work if a repair call comes up.

3. Test It Before You Need It
Don’t wait for the first cold snap to find out your furnace won’t turn on. Switch your thermostat to heat mode on a mild day and let it run for 10–15 minutes. Listen for anything unusual, banging, rattling, or a burning smell, and check that warm air is actually coming through the vents.

4. Check Your Vents and Registers
Walk through your home and make sure furniture, rugs, and curtains aren’t blocking any supply or return vents. Blocked vents force your system to work harder to heat the same space evenly.

5. Inspect the Thermostat
If you’re running an older thermostat, fall is a good time to check the batteries and confirm your schedule still matches your household’s routine. A smart thermostat can also help you catch temperature swings or a furnace that’s struggling to keep up before it becomes an emergency.

6. Book a Professional Tune-Up
The steps above catch the obvious stuff, but a full inspection covers what you can’t see: checking the heat exchanger for cracks, testing the ignition system, inspecting electrical connections, and confirming your furnace is burning safely and efficiently. This is the step that actually prevents mid-winter breakdowns, and it’s worth doing every fall regardless of how new or old your system is.

Our certified technicians offer full furnace tune-ups across Windsor-Essex, and Maintenance Membership holders get priority scheduling, which matters once the weather turns and everyone is booking at once.

Absolute Comfort’s Customer service is #1. Prompt, knowledgeable, genuine with no pressure! My furnace wasn’t working. Steve was the one who had to tell me my furnace was dead after 30yr -rip …he was sincerely apologetic! He was so nice and explained everything to me.
We were very pleased with the excellent and timely service we received from John Buckles at Absolute Comfort. He came out and fixed our air conditioner the same (and very hot) day we called. He was very pleasant and took the time to explain what the problem was. We would highly recommend Absolute Comfort Services to anyone.

Just had our furnace serviced by Justin from Absolute Comfort and was very pleased with his work and answering my many questions. He was very meticulous in going over all the components of the furnace. I would definitely recommend him if you would like to feel more comfortable with your heating system this winter.
Have had Absolute out a few times now, always had great service. Had an issue, called and technician was there within 2 hours. Reasonable price, diagnosed and provided options including replacement but no pressure at all. Had Wally come out next day for a quote, again no pressure, just honest opinion with various options. Whole new unit installed next day. Can’t recommend them more.
